WHAT SELLS IN TODAY’S MARKET?
The answer is less expensive things. Not many people have a lot of disposable income any more so it’s hurting the collectors market. People still want to buy but they do not want to pay top dollar for items in a antiques store or department store. We get asked this more then anything else!
Really great items always sell for the best money, people will dig a little deeper to buy something they love. Find that unique or rare item (nice enamel gas station sign or rare toy) and you have a great auction! Also if you have something people need (working tool for instance) and you offer it for sale they usually go for a good buck too.
Other then that… we just have to try the item and see. Good thing is we can give you some ideas of what is good and what is bad below.
WE WILL ALWAYS CONSIDER ORIGINAL ART
PASTELS – OIL PAINTINGS – WATER COLORS – MIXED MEDIA – POP ART – ETC
ESPECIALLY CANADIAN ARTISTS & ABORIGINAL FIRST NATIONS ARTWORK
#1 Seller is always COINS (Silver Coins, 1967 and older Canadian coins, Rare Coins, Gold Coins, ancients, we sell it all BANK NOTES are also REALLY HOT with our market) |
HOCKEY CARDS #2 – HOCKEY CARDS! |
WWI & WWII items are popular, especially medals, uniforms, helmets, ammo boxes, bayonets, swords even belt buckles and things made out of old bullets and artillery. |
Old nostalgic store advertising signs. Anything from the 1960’s and older with some sort of product advertising on it. Pop signs, automotive, candy tins, and even dye boxes! |
1950’s Furniture This market is slowing down but still a good danish Mid Century Modern designer piece (not a bedroom piece) is still pretty hot along with the Atomic Age stuff. Danish influenced designed Lamps, Chairs (Especially lounge and comfy chairs), Some Tables, Sofas, Credenzas, even ashtrays and book cases! |
Oil & Gas Old oil cans used or full, old glass gas station filler bottles, old giveaway coin banks, 1950’s or older gas station maps, gas pumps, oil and gas signs, |
Canada West & |
Crocks & Bottles Not as popular as they were a few years back but still get decent bids are antique salt glazed store crocks with ontario towns and cities on them (especially ones with designs, flowers and oddities). Old bottles can be valuable as well especially old embossed bottles and poison bottles. The coke market is soft but picking up again. Sealer jars and Milk bottles are loosing ground quickly but rare ones still sell good. |
Local Items Not as great as it was 5 years ago but anything from 1970 and older with midland or any surrounding town is still collected in this area. Some items are more common then others but some stuff can be very good. Crocks, Medicine Bottles, Store Items, etc.. |
Gold & Silver Rings, Chains, coins, bars, scrap jewelry, tea pots, cutlery, etc.. because of the price of gold these items are worth a lot more right now then in previous years. We have a scarp gold/silver buyer in the store on Fridays all day and your welcome to bring in rings and other good items on consignment. |
Costume Jewellery Signed costume jewellery can be very good, rhinestone broaches and cameos are still very popular. Bake-a-lite bangles, necklaces, etc.. and vintage watches are all still very collected and popular. Sherman broaches & necklaces are some of the best selling items we get. |
Records & Players 33 RMP albums are HOT once again. Mostly 1970/80 rock but some will do blues, jazz and even some country & crooners. 45’s and 78’s are not very popular, always exceptions but those would be the very rare recordings. Record players are always good too when working! |
Stamps Stamp Books full of stamps, 1800’s stamps, rare stamps and postal related items. Lots of collectors for that here. |
1970’s & 80’s Toys! Yes, these are HOT right now. Kenner, Marx, Reliable, transformers, gi-joe, etc. If it was plastic and made in the 1970s or 80’s it’s good. Tin toys and cast iron toys form the 60’s and older are still ok but the real market is the plastic stuff. Early video games and game systems, computers from the late 70’s and early 80’s and hand held electronic games from the 80’s are all really good! |
Coleman Lanterns 1960’s and older Coleman stuff sells. Mostly the lanterns and the older and better condition the better the item! |
Not so great stuff… The rule for the past 5 years is that anything that the baby boomers and their parents collected is flooding the market and very hard to sell.
